Waiting (is the hardest part) in VR

Abstract
I will present our work on studying participant behavior when waiting for service in different social settings, such as standing in a queue at a doctor's office or by themselves in a café. I will show how temporal delays when waiting to receive service manifest as changes in participant perceived frustration and likelihood to exit. While waiting for service is a frustrating experience in itself, the experience is worsened when non-normative behavior, such as queue cutting, is allowed by other members in a queue. I will show results from our work on how participants perceive normative behavior violation in VR in terms of frustration and likelihood to leave the experience. I will also discuss how our findings suggest that differences in self-reported loneliness ratings among Gen Z individuals contribute to differences in participant perceptions of waiting, informing the development of future serious service-based VR applications.
